Aluminum Plant Potline Decommissioning

Site Overview

Envirocon was contracted to decommission three potlines at an inactive aluminum smelter located in the Pacific Northwest. The scope of work included demolition of 720 aluminum reduction cells, removal of spent pot liner, asbestos abatement, restoration, and cleaning of structures that housed the aluminum reduction cells, and asset recovery and management. Envirocon worked closely with the client along with Northwest Clean Air Agency, Washington Department of Ecology, and Washington Labor and Industries, to ensure compliance with environmental and occupational regulations.

Project Highlights

  • Dismantled 720 above-grade steel structures to provide access to below-grade smelting pots that contained spent pot liner and aluminum bus.
  • Removed, processed, and recycled approximately 27,000 gross tons of ferrous material and approximately 32,000,000 pounds of aluminum.
  • Sized excavated and loaded 42,000 tons of hazardous waste (Spent Pot Liner – K088).
  • Envirocon is approaching 110,000 labor hours worked on the project.

Value Delivered

Envirocon engaged multiple asset buyers to maximize value of the recycled materials to our client. Aluminum bus bar was processed on site utilizing an excavator mounted saw, oxygen lance, and the Loma saw utilized by the plant prior to closing its doors. Packages were carefully constructed, labeled and tracked to ensure compliance with mill requirements. Ferrous material was processed, segregated with like grades, staged, and loaded as it was generated. These efforts resulted in timely shipments to buyers and garnered top prices for assets.
